Twitcasting and UStream with AirFlick1 Comment

Erica Sadun | 9:36 pm | January 12, 2011 | AirFlick

The open source twttr.mediaTypes project at github now allows you to send twitcasting stream URLs to AirFlick, courtesy of developer Norio Nomura, who has also created a way to send UStream videos to AirFlick. Cool stuff.

Can you test out the latest AirFlick 0.42 build and report back?  (Don’t forget: You need an Apple TV 2, enable AirPlay and don’t use a password from the ATV) Thanks! Update: Try version 0.43 instead. It uses port 8199 instead and hopefully won’t conflict and isn’t a restricted port for most people. (Check your firewall settings.) Update 2: Looks like mongoose is working on intel but not ppc yet… Trying to do some lipo love Update 3: Please try 0.44 Update 4: I’ve got confirmation from users (thanks guys!) on an i386 and on PPC. Anyone else? (Thanks to Gary McMahon and everyone else who pitched in.)

AirFlick, Apple TV, and AirPlay2 Comments

When using AirFlick, make sure you have enabled AirPlay on your Apple TV without a password. You can check whether AirPlay services are active by using the free Bonjour Browser utility from Tildesoft. Make sure you see _airplay._tcp. listed. One user writes: ” I have used Bonjour Browser and I see “_appletv-v2._tcp. - 1″ and listed under _sleep-proxy._udp. - 1 is Apple TV” That’s not going to work. Unless you see _airplay._tcp., you will not have access to your Apple TV from AirFlick. Disabling your firewalls can also help.

AirFlick things you need to know2 Comments

  1. If you downloaded any self-updating version of AirFlick 0.30 or earlier before 3:40PM Eastern time today, please re-download by hand whatever the newest update is. There was a problem with Sparkle (the updater) public keys being too long (2048 bits vs 1024 bits). You will not be able to use the “Update Now” features without having the new key. (Thank you goes to the fabulous Fraser Hess of Sweeter Rhythm.)
  2. If you are getting green artifacts in VLC encoding, please see this tweet. It appears that VLC 1.1.3 works better than 1.1.5 for transcoding.
  3. If you do not see an AirFlick option in Mac AirVideo Client yet, please update your software.

AirFlick gets Mac AirVideo Client integration and new design4 Comments

Erica Sadun | 10:39 pm | January 1, 2011 | AirFlick

David Hopson, the author of the unofficial AirVideo Mac Client has added AirFlick support to his app. You can now start streaming an AirVideo movie directly through AirFlick using AirVideo Server transcoding.  In related news,  AirFlick has a new design and a lot of new features. Please send constructive suggestions on how to improve the user experience. Thanks to Jason Holtslander for the fabulous new icon. And yes, there’s finally Sparkle support.

AirFlick and transcoding2 Comments

Erica Sadun | 8:54 am | December 31, 2010 | AirFlick

Transcoding remains the biggest challenge of AirFlick, and the one that’s least in my wheelhouse of expertise. The latest version offers ffmpeg as an embedded alternative and I’m working on adding a File > Open-and-Convert option for non-realtime conversion. If anyone wants to jump forward with a way to task AirVideo Server from Objective C (rather than Ruby), that could be a pretty  nice work-around. I’d also be interested in any feedback about VLC or ffmpeg settings, and ways to ensure that the transcoding speed matches playback speed. Just keep in mind that AirVideo Server’s target screen is less than a foot big in either direction and AirFlick’s target screen is typically HDTV.

Updates for both apps are regularly being posted. Please make sure you have the latest version before e-mailing me. And if you do e-mail me, please be aware that I’m looking for feedback and bug reports. I’m afraid cannot provide every user with personal support.
