Please test Bruce

Erica Sadun | 11:41 am | January 16, 2011 | AirPlay

If you have a Mac and an Apple TV 2, would you please test Bruce? Bruce is a testbed that I’ve been using to develop standalone AirPlay libraries but this morning I think I accidentally made Bruce useful as-is.

If you like this date/time/weather functionality, is it something you’d like to see me wrap into AirFlick?

Speaking of AirFlick, I’m seriously considering breaking the app in two — one to primarily to watch videos, the other geared more towards presentations and slide shows. What do you think?

Wow - Bruce rocks …. Just works as advertised … I would love to add a wallpaper image as a background image! Best would be a configuration option for the background picture…I would start with something like this : http://ves.me/gCSfYx

Add to this some simple rendering of a limited # of RSS feeds (header - abstract - image only) + slide show for some pics and this could be used anywhere from living room to office to public places.

I personally don’t mind complex multipurpose apps, so I don’t see the necessity to split up AirFlick but wouldn’t mind if you separate, even Bruce functionality could be added.

Added the background picture — thinking about RSS feeds…

NO DON’T DO THAT! In fact u should combine AirFlick, AirPDF, and AirPlayer into one single app, and just call that AirFlick. Don’t breakem up.

AirFlick (emulating device) and AirPlayer (emulating receiver) do not really swim together well.

I love the concept of Bruce. It’s like having Apple TV apps that run on a Mac.

Once again you’ve turned the box inside-out to reveal that it might hold more than we thought. Kind of a TARDIS within a TARDIS.

It’s not clear to me how you’re thinking of breaking up AirFlick. Would it be essentially two different frontends to a single backend?

I don’t honestly see a need to break these things up. It seems to me that a single video resource is like a slide show with one slide.

I’ve been thinking for some time about adapting a simple non-linear image presentation app I wrote to include plugins for external display methods. Hooking in to something like AirFlick would be great. However, it’s looking that if procrastinate long enough there might be no need to bother.

I’d like to see:
1. AirPlayer as a menu-bar app that launches on login (why take up a dock space?)
2. AirFlick getting a plugin API of some sort
3. AirFlick as a library

Thoughts?

I would have Bruce use a global weather provider, at this point is usefull only to USA users (not my case).

ah, forget that last one, if you enter the city name it works. Maybe you should replace the text box “Zip code” with something else

I think having AirFlick w. PDF support is the way to go.

Can bruce be made to play when you hit menu? or ask if it can come back up? works great though keep up the good work

It’s probably best if you have just a server and a client, the same way AirFoil is designed. So you would have something like AirServer for local videos, images, documents, generic data, urls or whatever you can fit in there, and AirPlayer to receive audio/video streams.

In my opinion a solid single app with multiple related functionalities is better than multiple apps with one functionality each.

I like Bruce. Just got around to needing to use Airflick for first time and noticed Bruce. I apologize for my stupidity but with the Screenshots functionality would it be possible to use ATV as a second display at some point? Or simply a mirror display? Is this a limitation of the Mac, ATV, Airplay, or on your end? Obviously would negate the need for any further “functions” since any page, video, pic, etc could be displayed. Again I’m sure it can’t be done and if i “knew anything” I would not be asking, but I am curious.
