findme: yes or no?

With the release of core location, does anyone still care about a command-line findme application? If so, what are the options you’d like to see available? Return XML or lat/lon or what? Post to twitter? Please let me know in the comments.

I’d really like to have findme back, lat/lon would be sufficient, on 1.1.4 i had a bash script that worked with wget to upload to my own personal site. Also is it the same to setup the script with launchd to have it be executed at intervals?
Thanks!

It would be nice if you could make a tracking app, which takes the position each n minutes and generates a googlemap link with the route.

Hi Erica,
I think in order of preference for features:
Basic XML/text output of LAT/LON
Post to a URL of our choice (could be twitter)
Optional ‘wait for nn seconds or xx accuracy’
Comment by JeremyLaurenson | August 4, 2008 | 5:42 pm
Oh yeah - and in additional to LAT/LON the accuracy number would be nice.

Yes please. I was actually going to email you about this today, so timing is excellent.
Just returning lat/lon is fine for me.

I think a newer version of findme that supports core location would be excellent.

Without a custom app, is there any other way to send core location positioning via a command line? I don’t think so, so yeah! We’ll need it!
It would be awesome if findme first checked for gps availability, then after a set timeout value, used the triangulation method. You could provide which method was used in the XML generated in addition to the other stuff gps provides such as accuracy, altitude, etc…
Thanks Erica for some dang fine, useful programs!!

Don’t think I answered your original question’s intent, so here’s WHY we still need a COMMAND line utility:
1. So we can programmatically retreive the info and send/pipe it to other websites/apps using other apps or cgi commands.
(example: online tracking of phone’s position if lost or stolen through curl to twitter, etc.)
2. Can pipe information into other custom apps without having to reinvent the wheel
3. Really quick way to get location without quitting terminal.

Erica:
Personally, I’d really like an updated version of findme to work with the GPS on the 3G. I poked around trying to see how I’d make my own application to do this, but I simply can’t figure it out.

Peppery, Thanks for your comment. I don’t own a 3G iPhone. So I can’t write for GPS.

Correct me if I’m not mistaken but wouldn’t writing something for Core Location on the first generation iPhones automatically work with the GPS on the iPhone 3G?

That last comment sort of sounded demanding. I didn’t mean it to, sorry. I immensely appreciate your work and all that you’ve done for the iPhone hacking community

I’m not using core location. Core location will not work from the command line due to authentication issues.

Yes please, I would love to have the iphone send me periodic updates to a website for the purpose of recovering a lost phone.
I know there are some people that used your findme to create a program to upload photos, text messages, emails etc from the point of phone being stolen, the gps location was also submitted.
thanks

I FOUND A WAY TO ACCESS CORELOCATION GPS FROM COMMAND LINE and SEND TO SERVER!
Checkout the following link: http://lbs.tralfamadore.com then click on the Developer Blog. I just left detailed instructions on how to do same. Too lengthy to put in this blog. -Mike

how about posting the location to Pachube http://www.pachube.com
there’s already a tutorial about using findme to connect the iphone to pachube, http://community.pachube.com/?q=node/57 but i could see it would be kind of interesting to send both your geolocation and some of the other iphone sensor data at the same time (accelerometer, and is there a light sensor too?)

The Comment by mcaramb | August 21, 2008 | 12:55 pm
looks very good, maybe you can include that in your findme script
Can you please answer to my comment, because i (and maybe others) want to know if you still interested to make it better or if you don’t have time for it.
Greetings

Hi Erica,
I just purchased an iPhone and after taking it home to immediate jailbreak and hack around on it, discovered your findme script. I wanted to express interest in either it’s continued development or at the very least, another command line executable that uses core location. Do you have plans to continue it’s development in some form?
Also, it appears that you had deposited a findme-better that appears to generate a google maps link. I can no longer find this version in your utilities (at least not on cydia and I didn’t see it in the latest version on your FTP site). I have verified that the cydia version only seems to spit out latitude and longitude. Is there anyway I can get a hold of the newer version of findme?
Many Thanks!
