Introducing AppFlow
Erica Sadun | 9:56 am | February 21, 2008 | Test Requests, Applications, Software, iPod touch, iPhone
As part of my iPhone Programming book project, I ended up doing some cover flow work last night and AppFlow is the result. It’s a simple cover-flow based application launcher. You can check it out here. To use, just flip to your favorite application (it’s alphabetical) and double-tap the icon to launch.

Great application launching experience! Works well on my 1.1.3 ziphone jailbroken 8GB iPod Touch. The double tap seems to need to be quite fast. MobileCal doesn’t display the date on the icon (understandable). I don’t know where you are getting the application list from, but interestingly, in the appflow view, the application “Camera” is shown. Since I am on an iPod Touch, there should be no Camera.app, but rather MobileSlideshow.app (also called Photos). Double-tapping on the Camera icon does manage to launch the Photos.app, so no real problem here.

FYI you need to grant privs in order for this app to work . CHMOD 777 always works….

[…] I’m not a big fan of CoverFlow and rarely use it, but it seems a lot of people feel differently about it and now it’s making an appearance on the iPhone thanks to Erica Sadun. Erica came up with AppFlow, which is essentially the same thing as CoverFlow, but it’s for your iPhone. You can find it here. […]

for me this app aint working at all, can only get to hello world then it goes back to springboard :S got Iphone 1.1.3, 3.9 ziphone jailbroken
Comment by Erica Sadun | February 21, 2008 | 2:23 pm
t4rdif: Make the application executable
eric.muir: That’s a little more ambitious than what I currently have time to do. I’ll put it on my to do list and lets hope someone else grabs the idea for a contacts coverflow.

Hello! This is my first post… Thank you for all your hard work! I really apprecate it! I am, however, having problems (my first problem) with your new app, Appflow. I can’t get it to launch. I have ssh and afp on my 1.1.3 Jailbroken iPhone. What do I need to do to get this to launch?
Thanks again and I’m a huge supporter!

hey erica,
awesome work as always.. just one thing missing that would be very helpful.. “home” which goes back to the springboard/homescreen so you can exit appflow without having to choose an app…

Just to let everyone know, it is on Installer now!
Comment by darngooddesign | February 22, 2008 | 8:11 am
While cool, its not as useful as an app launcher; howver, it would be very cool as a photo browser.
Comment by peu | February 22, 2008 | 9:56 am
it would be nice to be able to launch this app automagically when you turn the phone sideways.
I mean
phone up: regular springboard
sideways: appflow
Comment by dallasnights | February 22, 2008 | 10:41 am
Can you add Webclips and also make it work for Photos that would be cool,
Great work
Comment by exiledsurfer | February 22, 2008 | 11:58 am

Great work Erica, it’s awesome that you find the time being a mom and all to bestow upon us all the great apps that you’ve come up with. I loved that iListen app btw, it’s a pity it never took off. Is there a way to inject higher quality icons into each application, that would scale to work fine on the springboard but also look great in appflow? , also it’d be great to be able to select which applications are shown in AppFlow, it’d be nice to get rid of the crazy apps like FieldTest and DemoApp (what are they btw!?). I agree it’d be awesome to have a favorites list with pictures of your contacts, even if you’d have to set it up manually within AppFlow (if it dosn’t grab the pics and stuff from the contacts app). Anyway, those are my suggestions although they are probably all things you’ve already thought of. Anyway, great job, I can’t wait to see what you come up with next.
Comment by jacjac1358 | February 23, 2008 | 2:34 am
is there at way you could make it so appflow comes up when you tilt the phone sideways on the springboard? Also I like the contacts and same idea, with when you tilt in the phone.app it would show ”contact flow”
Comment by SPiDeR | February 24, 2008 | 1:23 am
It would be nice to see if you could implement some form of app list. So that you could hide apps from showing up in appflow. Great app by the way and thank you.

I could not get this to work on my 1.1.3 4.6BL ZiPhone jailbroken iPhone. I could not get past the Hello World screen. I set the permissions of the AppFlow folder to 0755 and still the same. i found that if you go into the AppFlow folder and set the permissions to all 6 files to 0755 it works like a charm! Hope this helps anyone in need! Great work as always Erica!

it would be great to make an iphone coverflow for files too, not just apps.
a little section of a chapter for your book, erica.
btw, great idea, a book on this stuff. it’ll be a great book.

Can anyone explain exactly how AppFlow enumerates applications? Apparently, in 2.0.x, AppFlow will not enumerate an empty folder (such as “Documents” within the Applications folder and thus crashes the second AppFlow is loaded. Why does AppFlow not simply skip over empty subfolders within Applications?
