Beta 6 should let you know whether the server is down rather than just that it couldn’t find the song.

Suggestion for next versions: grab the music lyrics as well!
Awesome app!
Comment by martijnve | January 9, 2008 | 4:42 pm
Ok working fine,
I just had a great idea if i may say so:
Maybe you could draw the UI upside down
That way you could point it at the speakers and still see the ui normally.
Comment by pzich | January 9, 2008 | 4:50 pm
Still amazes me, it would be awesome if you could grab the artwork too, but as an option because it could be annoyingly slow on edge.
Comment by coadyj | January 9, 2008 | 5:04 pm
Very good, amazed at what it can do.
Crashes the phone a bit but im sure that will be fixed in the next beta.
i really am impressed with your programing skills.
Comment by rosner | January 9, 2008 | 5:09 pm
WOW! I have been testing this app ALL DAY LONG every time i hear a song!
Works great nearly the whole time. New version even better!
A sugestion would be to call the “Send to mail” “Mail” and not “Note”. I am sure the application itself will get more and more stable.
GREAT JOB ERICA!
Thanks so much
Comment by likwidfuzion | January 9, 2008 | 5:14 pm
This appears to be a better release. The “Push to Start Sampling” button could use some cosmetic work though. It looks weird and out of place when it’s overlayed on background. :p
Nice work overall, thanks!
Comment by mav | January 9, 2008 | 5:18 pm
A suggestion that would make this app perfect:
Ability to store samples on iPhone. Why? Because on the road you don’t always have access to WiFi, and EDGE is expensive in some countries. So it would be perfect if you could store samples (and name them as you wish), and identify them later.
Comment by nicotlsefr | January 9, 2008 | 5:29 pm
Hi erica…so beautiful app…but why isn’t it working for me?beta1 to 6 are the same….reboot, or the few times that it works, no song found…even with the beatles and michael jackson…lol
I can’t understand why it is so different from one to another iphone…do you understand what happens?
Thanks and pardon for my english (i’m french…)
And please go on….
Comment by hersh | January 9, 2008 | 5:29 pm
Amazing App !
I second some suggestions ;
- drawing the UI upside-down for better pointing
- renaming Note to Mail
- storing samples on the iPhone for later recognition
And a new one : to store the search results on the iPhone (as notes / list or whatever) so as not to be obliged to send each of them as a mail
Personally i’m not experiencing frequent crashes.
Awesome work, thanks again for everything!
Comment by ola | January 9, 2008 | 5:35 pm
First off; thanks for a great program!
I have to say I disagree with the requests for lyrics, artwork and upside down GUI. Keep it simple like it is now.
I’ve noticed that when I use it I hold the phone in such a position that I don’t see the screen. Would be great if you could implement vibration when it’s done sampling (kinda like Sketches do when you erase the screen). This way we would know when it’s done sampling regardless how you hold the phone..
Comment by hersh | January 9, 2008 | 5:57 pm
This is the great thing with the www. Scrap the upside-down UI, ola is right ; vibration would be the ultimate “done” signal.
Comment by NetMage | January 9, 2008 | 6:00 pm
One thing that seems useful for a lot of people would be some type of level meter so you can decide if you have adequate signal before sampling.
A quality indicator after sampling wouldn’t be bad either
Comment by geircito | January 9, 2008 | 6:03 pm
Why “drawing the UI upside-down for better pointing”?
I don’t turn my iPhone around so the mic is directing directly to the speaker (on the stereo/radio). I just place it on my desk, hold it in my hands as usual or place it in the dock. Listen is fully capable of recording the sample using this method, and I don’t have to play my music loud either.
Comment by alberas | January 9, 2008 | 6:09 pm
this soft bug all time all time in my iphone reboot reboot
Comment by geircito | January 9, 2008 | 6:34 pm
People with crash issues:
When 0.1beta was out I had a lot of crashes with Listen - the same with Voice Notes (it actually didn’t record a thing). So I decided to do some cleaning and reinnstalled 1.1.2. After that both Listen and Voice Notes works with no crashes at all.
Comment by ecosta | January 9, 2008 | 6:38 pm
Working just fine. No reboot or look up. 1.1.1
I agree on vibrate to indicate the end of recording. Its a good idea.
Sometimes the recording fase takes to long, 10 or 15 seconds. I can’t figure out why.
Comment by flodi | January 9, 2008 | 7:26 pm
hi I am from Brazil and it’ worked for me since beta 1.
The new Betas keep getting better. On the other versions I couldn’t use it through EDGE and I dont know why, but it’s ok now on the beta 6
My suggestion is to have the option to save as notepad like they have inter the wetool.
Anyway. Congratulations for the work u have been doing for the iphone users. Good Luck

Comment by guidomo | January 9, 2008 | 7:59 pm
For people who don’t have Edge all the time: it would be great if one could record several bits of music and then have them all looked up when back to an Internet connection.
Comment by dirfrops | January 9, 2008 | 9:25 pm
Works great even on Edge. No need to hold it to a speaker as long as the music is loud enough to hear comfortably. In the car it worked fine. Went home to show my fiancee and she loaded up some Chinese music and THAT is when she became amazed. Everything spits back just as it should…in Chinese too. Sweet Erica…totally Sweet…but I wish beta 6 had the find in iTunes store like the previous beta had.

where can we see what songs are on the server?
Comment by JuiCe | January 10, 2008 | 12:49 am
I’m now using 1.1.2 instead of 1.0.2 and the app works perfectly. No crashes, no glitches, no disappointment of any kind. Although you are not responsible for the actual audio comparison, this is an invaluable app, and I am compelled to donate for it. Time spent means nothing when it comes to good apps. Innovation is everything, and this is as innovative as it gets. Thanks to Gracenotes, but without Listen, Gracenotes wouldn’t exist for the iPhone.
Create a donate link!!!

First of all, great work on everything you have done!
Now, since beta 1 I have been able to try to identify ONE song, after that one song try my phone crashes and reboots. I am running on 1.1.1 (3A109a) Modem 04.01.13_G, unlocked with T-Mobile via Unlocker. The app works and looks nice but has not successfully identified any songs. I hope that this can be fixed in a later version as I am very excited for this app. OH by the way I have voice notes and that has no problems whatsoever, if that helps you any.
Thank you so much,
Magicride

Great app. All beta versions worked great on my 1.1.2 iPhone.
Only wished it would have a more unified iPhone app look to it.
Looking forward to updates. Thank you.

Hi Erica, nice work;)
Some suggestions ;
- rotate the UI on 180* at start
- add “Save to Notes”
- add “Open in iTunes”
- history of searches
Good luck=)
Comment by Rudi77 | January 10, 2008 | 4:32 am
Works great here too. Couple of comments.
1) when not on wifi, gprs doesnt seem to kick in. Usually I see the little spinning star at the top of the screen when the iphone uses gprs (email, maps etc)
2) in the case above where gprs isnt used to contact the server, the only message back is “song not found”
Using 1.1.1, on Vodafone Live subscription in the Netherlands. Any suggestions appreciated. My favourite app right now thanks Erica! If the GPRS issue can be fixed I’d be so happy!
Comment by omatzyo | January 10, 2008 | 6:34 am
i’ve had the same issue with all of the betas so far. when using edge, it always responds with ’song not found…’ however, if i’m on wifi it recognizes everything, flawlessly.
(don’t see spinning symbol on edge, as rudi77 pointed out)
very nice application! thanks!
Comment by mrshibby | January 10, 2008 | 6:42 am
application is just too good
only thing i miss is that edge works.. so i can only check songs when i´m at home.. and most things i play there are from my itunes where i can look what artist and title it is
so if you get the edge working this would be the killer app
nice work!
Comment by leandroc76 | January 10, 2008 | 6:49 am
Well done. Worked for me on just about every song. It didn’t recognise a few songs because of static. or at least that’s what I think.
I tried singing into it but fails every time. Course I’m a horrible singer!
Has anyone tried singing into it?
Comment by nicotlsefr | January 10, 2008 | 7:04 am
As for others users, it doesn’t work for me…with all the betas..
So i’ve tried Vnotes and it’s the same for me….record nothing or crash…
Is there a problem with the microphone level or activation?
thanks for your help and support
it seems that when listen is not working on an iphone, vnote is not working too…
Comment by Ryan9104 | January 10, 2008 | 7:10 am
TK, I don’t think you can. It uses the Sony Ericsson network to lookup songs.
Comment by Rudi77 | January 10, 2008 | 7:14 am
One small feature request, if we can’t customize the subject and/or message that goes into the email (send note), could you make it so that there’s a subject already filled in? Maybe “Song Search Result from Listen.app” or “Cool song! - found with Listen.app” - I know I can just re-type it, but it might be cool as an option in preference settings for the app.
Thank you thank you thank you! You’re awesome - and how can it be less than 60kb! brilliant!
Comment by Rudi77 | January 10, 2008 | 7:19 am
sorry to mail so much, but I’d also agree that having the iphone vibrate once when the sample is reorded would be an awesome idea.
Thanks Erica for listening to our requests and moan sometimes and spending your time on these apps. I think it’s great you do this, and BTW, It’d be a pleasure to click on a “donate” button.
Comment by martijnve | January 10, 2008 | 10:32 am
@leandroc76
Singing into it is never ever going to work,
this system works bij analyzing the sound not the words. even if you had the origianl singer sing it perfectly it would not be recognized.

Dear Erica,
this project is awesome.
Could you explain the basic concepts?
I 5 sec, are you able to identify an invariable signature for each track before comparing it to a db?
In Any case, I love it!!! congrat .
how is it possible to write you personally?

Awesome app — just keeps improving. Beta 6 performs well over EDGE, which makes me smile.
Held the phone up in a bar last night to find out what the DJ was playing. Worked like a champ (as long as the people around me weren’t talking too much).
Your comments say there’s a donate button, but I don’t see it in beta 6. coming soon?

Very nice application!! best one until now.
I think it would be nice to have, instead of the round button, a slide switch like the one to unlock or answer the phone, that would say ” Slide to Listen”.
Just a suggestion.
Comment by TAPshooter | January 10, 2008 | 5:02 pm
Fantastic application! I’ve been using it since beta1 and love the newest version. Here is some feedback -
I’m running version 6 on an iPhone version 1.1.1 (3A109a) in the USA with modem firmware 04.01.13_G.
I’m having no issues with the microphone. I don’t have to point the mic towards the music to get a successful song query. It works fast and near 100% on WIFI and is very consistent on edge. I’ve been using it in the car on my way to and from work and just sit it on the center console with the music at a comfortable volume and even on edge and driving 70mph I’m getting great results. I was even able to make it work at the grocery store by sampling the music being piped in over the ceiling speakers.
Using this version, I’ve only had one reboot after about 75 song samplings (on edge).
Things I like:
The big button is easy to find and press while driving
Love that it works so well on EDGE
I like the simplicity
I like some of the suggestions made above but hope you implement them as options in a settings menu and not as standard features. I would like the options to retrieve album art, artist bios, and lyrics, but only on WIFI. I would also use the feature to save the track information to a note so I can look up info on the artist or song later.
Thanks for the great applications.
-Steve

ok i dont know if this helps for debugging the Edge/gprs thing but here goes.
When wifi is on and there is a wifi connection this works great
When wifi is on but there is no wifi network around, there is a “connection error” message - and the little spinny GPRS wheel doesnt even try to spin to show sending the data
When wifi is turned off, and i try to use the app I just get - “song not found”, and the little spinny GPRS wheel doesnt even try to spin to show sending the data

THIS APP IS FINISHED, as it stands now.
Apparently Erica is sending the requests to:
http://wap.sonyericsson.com/recognize/query
As soon as they found out iPhones were using it, you better believe they were going to put a stop to it.
Erica, do you have a Plan B?

If I’m right it’s going to be a shock for a lot of people who didn’t know what was happening on the back-end.

Very cool - the service was able to recognize some opening / credit music from some obscure anime shows! I couldn’t find the song name / artist elsewhere so this was a big help!
Suggestion - invert the screen controls, so that you can read them while holding the iPhone upside down as you point the microphone end at the music source please!
Here’s hoping Gracenote likes you!
