Test Request: Listen Beta 3
Erica Sadun | 8:42 pm | January 8, 2008 | Test Requests, Bug Fixes, Feature Requests, Software, iPhone
Beta 3 adds UTF8 string encoding. For whatever reason, the iPhone doesn’t seem to handle full unicode–or maybe it’s not recognizing that NSUnicodeStringEncoding = 10. Anyway, please give this a try and let me know how much or how little this improves internationalization.

NICE! Chinese works.. This is amazing! Where do you grab info from?
Comment by flopethedope | January 8, 2008 | 8:56 pm
Short of it not finding songs, it seems like whatever you changed in this version has stopped the random reboots.
Comment by Erica Sadun | January 8, 2008 | 9:06 pm
I’ve changed nothing that would cause or prevent reboots. Honest!
This is as vanilla a program as you might imagine.
Comment by JuiCe | January 8, 2008 | 9:08 pm
Any chance this will be fixed to work with 1.0.2? I get as far as contacting the server, chills for a few seconds, and then back to SpringBoard land. First Jiggy, now this. Must.. upgrade… phone…..
Comment by Assassin | January 8, 2008 | 9:12 pm
yes please get this working for us 1.0.2 users. thanx
Comment by amisle | January 8, 2008 | 10:26 pm
Yes, internationalization is much improved over beta 1. I tested with several foreign songs and all displayed fine.
The only problem I am having is that often the album name will be cut off - I only get the first 10 characters or so. This was not a problem in b1. It is not always truncated, though - some launches will display the full title.
Erica, this program is amazing! Please give us some details on how you did this. What database are you using?
Comment by pbags | January 8, 2008 | 10:51 pm
its gracenote’s database - www.gracenote.com/business_solutions/music_id/
(hope you don’t mind me linking Erica) - I had this feature on my sony w880i and I sorely missed it - until now. Well done Erica - thanks so much!

This beta is much improved thanks to Unicode.
I think the app can be improved further by giving the user the option to press Done to go to the purple background screen with the song info instead of quitting the app and a Quit button to actually quit the program.

Song not found message given when wifi is not active. Should this work with GPRS?, I was hoping so, using this in a cafe or club would be awesome. Hi from Holland, and thanks for the best app to hit the iphone! Rudi
Comment by Rudi77 | January 9, 2008 | 5:47 am
The chinese songs I’ve tried so far work great
Comment by keng | January 9, 2008 | 6:02 am
Erica,
This is an amazing piece of work. I’ve been testing B1 and B3. It works great over Wifi but when i’m on the road and try to id a song. The data is a bit out of place.
The artist name is in the song title
The album name is in the artist title
and for the Album name i get:
Send music info via SMS
When i send this in a email to my self it looks like this:
I’ve been listening to music on my iPhone with Listen.app.
Song: Michael Bublé
Artist: Call Me Irresponsible
Album: Send music info via SMS
This is the only real flaw i can discover in Listen. Hope you can use this info.
Comment by loris | January 9, 2008 | 6:14 am
Cool improvements, that new encoding release works great.
One more idea i am coming with: sometimes the song you want to identify can be on your iPhone (for instance when listening to a web radio or a non tagged mp3, etc) … Thus do you think it (i guess so) would be possible to choose whether to record the song from your microphone or from your own iPhone sound output ?

You can’t record music you’re playing ont he iPhone. The celestial AV Controller and AV Recorder classes interfere with each other.
Comment by Rudi77 | January 9, 2008 | 9:09 am
How much data is being sent? Does the app send the snippet of music or convert it to a manageable chunk?
Comment by martijnve | January 9, 2008 | 9:28 am
From my testing it seems so send just over 15KB and receive something between 5KB and 10KB.
That downstream figure seems to be much more than necessary?
Comment by martijnve | January 9, 2008 | 9:28 am
New encodig is working fine btw!

People with crash issues:
When 0.1beta was out I had a lot of crashes with Listen - the same with Voice Notes (it actually didn’t record a thing). So I decided to do some cleaning and reinnstalled 1.1.2. After that both Listen and Voice Notes works with no crashes at all.
Comment by mmoore2084 | January 9, 2008 | 10:19 am
Works pretty good for me, some songs won’t be recognized but usually pretty good. Would like to see a button to maybe try again if it doesn’t find it instead of having to close it out and start over. Thanks for your hard work

Strange, when I download from here (betas 1-3) and use WinSCP to install, I can see the background screen but the program exits after a minute. If I use Installer.app the beta-1 works fine though. Probably a conflict somewhere (got a lot of apps on my phone).
Comment by martijnve | January 9, 2008 | 10:56 am
@ armitage
You need to set the permissions after uploading with winscp dont know exacly what the minimum is but i use 755.
Select all the files in the folder right-click on one of them select properties and the set the persmissions at the bottom.
Comment by grahamgilbert | January 9, 2008 | 11:11 am
Beta 1 worked perfectly, but beta 3 gets to a purple screen and then dies and goes back to the springboard.
Comment by vinz262002 | January 9, 2008 | 11:19 am
Exact same situation than grahamgilbert.
I hav uninstalled beta1 thru Installer, and installed beta3 thru AFP then tried with chmod 755 the app but nothing change… Get the purple screen and then the app crashes.
BTW, Great app !!! (from what I’ve tried with beta1)

I have tried all 3 beta Versions on my 1.1.2 iPhone.
5 sec after starting the Program my iPhone reboots.
With the first beta i started the prog and held it 5 sec. near the radio. “Finished recording..connecting to server was everything i saw. It still does not work.
Colours have changed but the problem ist still the same. Please fix it

Erica, This is simply the most jaw dropping of all the apps I’ve shown to my non-techie friends. Its worked great on my 1.1.2 iPhone. Thanks for hooking this one up

Erica,
I don’t have an iPhone yet. I’ll receive this on Friday. But I must say that this will be the first app that i will install on my iPhone.
I have a question though.
Is there a kind of memory in the program?
Because lets say for instance you are in your car and you hear a song on the radio. You are like… love this song… but what is the title?
You turn on this app and it returns the name and artist of the song.
What now if you close the app and you are home thinking… damn.. what was the name of the song….
To sum up… is there a way when you’ve requested a name of a song that it copies the name and artist to a tempfile what you can recall and see which songs you have found with this program?
Let me know if it is possible or maybe will come in a next beta.
If my english isn’t well i apologize. It’s not my native language.
Dustin

Got the beta-3 on Installer.app working great! Seems more responsive than yesterday - or is it just me?
Erica, another feature that would make this app PERFECT - parse the song info and download the lyrics from a service like leoslyrics.com! THANKS!

Also, iTunes link is returning “This item cannot be accessed on your device, but may be available from the iTunes Store when accessed from your computer.”
Comment by Erica Sadun | January 9, 2008 | 3:00 pm
Make sure to set the actual application (Listen.app/ListenApp) to 755. Chmodding the .app bundle won’t do it for you.
