Test Request: Listen Beta 2
Erica Sadun | 2:19 pm | January 8, 2008 | Test Requests, Feature Requests, Software, iPhone
Beta 2 is ready to be tested. Unfortunately, Mobile Safari bombs on the search request (it tells you that you can’t perform the search on your device) but you can now send song information by email. Also, the interface is a little prettier.
Things not in this version: Multiple searches per launch. Foreign character support. Saving samples for later searches.

it seems to lockup on me if it fails a search and i close then reopen to try again….also it’s not finding the songs that beta-1 had no trouble finding. I’ll wait for more work on it and i’ll go back to beta-1 for now….thank you this is by far the best app generated by far. Now only if you could add in lyrics, and save to possible download from seeqpod you would pull the chain on the rest of these DEVS…Once again Awesome work Erica….P.S. thanks for not making us donate money to sample your betas and full programs…..I will donate soon…im just broke as hell at the moment and wife would kill me if i even put 1.00 on hour credit cards…she wears the pants, …LOL

Working like a charm, this is, for sure, going to be a killer-app … Here is my improvement ideas:
The amazing thing about this app is its speed, so I think you should provide the minimal informations (like you do at the moment, artist, title, album) by default and maybe allow the user (with an options panel) to fetch more (lyrics, album cover, lastfm bio, …)
You shouldn’t begin the recording at the app launch but have a start page with a Listen button, then the Done button would redirect to that page instead of closing the app, thus allowing to identify multiple songs in a row
Some bugs i’ve found:
- some problems with the charset encoding in the artist/title/album with accents.
- the iTunes URL looks wrong, i guess it shouldn’t open the iTunes website via Safari, but open the iTunes app …
Congratulations, most amazing native apps i’ve been using so far.

another suggestion, because not everybody has edge or wifi constantly.. can we cache the 5 ~ 10 second clips so we can search when we come upon a wifi connection? would be sweet..

NOW, everytining works GREAT - gives me info of everything I listen to, even norwegian odd songs - and no crashes!!!!
Also with options “Search iTunes” (for buying…)
and “Send Email”…
and message if info isn’t found (tried with no sound..)
This is just GREAT!!!!!!!
(charset encoding isn’t good… norwegian special characters is wrong/odd).

The server has been up and down today so service has been pretty bad. Team is working on getting direct access to Gracenote’s developer program and data. More info as it develops.

I had one instance when Listen found the song and displayed the iTunes and email links but not the song information. I reran it on the same song which then came up fine.

Beta 2 works with 1.1.1 I can verify while Beta 1 would not. Anyway, looks good, Only suggestions I can give is maybe a skin changer and when you click done, maybe just let the screen up without anything else, just the info. Also, a retry button would be nice. But once again, this app is amazing. This app is a keeper…

This App sounds amazing but is not working for me under 1.0.2. It samples then says that it connects and then crash.
here is what I get when I launch it from a shell
# ./ListenApp
Recorded 7200 bytes
objc[54]: FREED(id): message pushClientEvent:object:object2: sent to freed object=0×166020
zsh: trace trap ./ListenApp
#

Mine is 100% ’song not found’ found so far, on even quite mainstream stuff, whereas Beta 1 was getting just about everything. Does this maybe show ‘Song not found’ when unable to contact the server???
